Asphalt Contractor in Georgetown, explained
01Asphalt Services We Provide in Georgetown
Asphalt work breaks down into four jobs. Most properties need one of them at a time, and an honest contractor tells you which one instead of selling you the biggest one.
Asphalt Paving
New hot mix asphalt over a compacted base for driveways, private roads, parking areas and subdivision streets. This is the right call when there is no pavement yet, or when the old surface is so far gone that patching would cost more than starting over. Read more on our asphalt paving page.
Commercial Asphalt Paving
Parking lots, loading areas, church and school lots, RV storage yards and retail pads. Commercial jobs bring heavier loads, TAS and ADA layout, fire lanes, drainage design and phasing so your business stays open while we work. See commercial asphalt paving.
Asphalt Repair and Patching
Potholes, alligator cracking, edge breakup, sunken utility cuts and soft spots. We cut the failed area back to solid material, fix the base if the base is the cause, and place a compacted hot mix patch that will still be there in five years. Details on asphalt repair and patching.
Asphalt Maintenance
Crack filling, sealcoating, restriping and drainage fixes on a schedule. Maintenance is the cheapest money you will ever spend on pavement, and in Central Texas heat it is the difference between a lot that lasts 12 years and one that lasts 25. Learn more on asphalt maintenance.
02Why Asphalt Has a Harder Life in Georgetown
Pavement in Georgetown fights three things, and none of them is winter.
Expansive clay. East of I-35, including much of the Westinghouse Rd corridor, Teravista and out toward Hutto and Taylor, the ground is Blackland Prairie clay. It shrinks hard in a summer drought and swells after a wet spring. Pavement sitting on it heaves, drops and cracks along the edges as the clay pulls away from the border. West of I-35, around Sun City, Serenada and out along Williams Drive toward Lake Georgetown, the soil is shallow limestone and caliche. It is more stable, but it drains differently and needs a base that is keyed into it properly.
Heat and UV. We get long stretches over 100 degrees. Sun cooks the light oils out of asphalt, so a black surface greys out, turns brittle and starts raveling within a few years if nobody seals it.
Water. Flash flooding and hard spring and fall storms push a lot of water across a lot in a short time. Standing water soaks into the base and turns it to mush. Once the base is soft, the surface fails no matter how good the mix was.
The hard freezes in February 2021, December 2022 and January 2024 opened up existing cracks, but freeze and thaw is not the main enemy here. Heat, sun and moving clay are. That changes how we build: thicker base on clay, tighter compaction, real attention to slope and drainage, and a sealcoat schedule that starts early instead of late.
How to Choose an Asphalt Contractor in Williamson County
Growth around Georgetown has brought a lot of paving crews through town, some good, some just passing through on the way to the next boom. A few things to check before you sign anything:
Be careful of anyone offering "leftover asphalt" at a discount today only. That mix has been cooling in the truck for hours and will not compact right, and the crew will be gone before it fails.
Which Asphalt Service Does Your Property Need?
Use this table as a first pass. We confirm on site, because what looks like a surface problem is sometimes a base problem, and the price difference matters.
| What you see | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Scattered cracks, surface greying, otherwise firm | UV oxidation and age | Crack fill and sealcoat (maintenance) |
| A few potholes or one soft, sunken area | Water in the base at that spot | Cut and replace patch (repair) |
| Alligator cracking over more than a quarter of the surface | Base failure or pavement that was too thin | Remove and repave, or mill and overlay |
| Edges crumbling, pavement pulling away from the border | Clay shrinkage and no edge support | Edge repair, then seal |
| Standing water for more than a day after rain | Grade or drainage problem | Regrade or drainage work, then patch |
| Gravel or dirt drive, no pavement yet | Nothing to fix | New paving, hot mix or chip seal |

Asphalt Contractor questions, answered
What is the difference between an asphalt contractor and a general paving contractor?
An asphalt contractor works specifically in hot mix asphalt: paving it, repairing it, sealing it and maintaining it. A general paving contractor may also do concrete, pavers or chip seal. TXST Paving does both. Our paving contractor page covers the wider list, but asphalt is the core of what we do every day in Georgetown.
How thick should new asphalt be in Georgetown?
It depends on what is under it and what drives on it. A residential driveway on a properly compacted base is typically 2 to 3 inches of asphalt after compaction. Commercial lots with truck traffic run thicker, often in two lifts. On Blackland clay east of I-35 we put more into the base, because that is where the movement comes from. Every estimate we write lists the depths.
Does soil really change how you build a driveway on the west side versus the east side of town?
Yes. West of I-35, around Sun City and Serenada, the ground is limestone and caliche, so the base sits on something firm and the main concern is drainage. East of I-35, around Teravista and toward Hutto, expansive clay swells and shrinks with the weather. There we compact a deeper base, pay attention to edge support and try to keep water from getting under the pavement.
How long does an asphalt job take?
A driveway repair or patch is usually done in a day. A new residential driveway is typically one to two days including base work. A commercial lot depends on size and whether we are phasing it to keep your business open. We can drive on new asphalt after it cools, usually the next day, but we ask you to stay off it with heavy vehicles for a few days in summer heat.
Do you charge for estimates?
No. Estimates are free and in writing. We come out, measure, check the base and drainage and give you a scope with thicknesses and a price. You can call (737) 403-8619 Monday to Saturday or use the contact page. We serve Georgetown, Round Rock, Leander, Hutto and the surrounding Williamson County area.

Not sure which of these you need?
That is what the free site visit is for. We look at the pavement and tell you what it actually needs.
