Curb & Gutter Repair in Georgetown

Curb & Gutter Repair, done right for Georgetown ground and heat

Walk the edge of any parking lot along Westinghouse Road or in a Teravista retail center and you will find it: a curb section lifted an inch above its neighbor, a corner knocked off at the drive entrance, a gutter that holds a puddle two days after the rain stops. Curb and gutter is the part of a lot nobody thinks about until it breaks, and by then it has usually taken some asphalt with it.

TXST Paving Company repairs and replaces curb and gutter across Georgetown, Round Rock, Hutto and the rest of Williamson County. We cut out the bad sections, fix what is going on underneath, and pour new concrete that matches the existing profile and carries water the way it was meant to. Curb & Gutter Repair in Georgetown, explained

How Curb and Gutter Fails Around Georgetown, Georgetown TX01

How Curb and Gutter Fails Around Georgetown

There are three main causes here, and they often show up together.

Clay heave

East of I-35, the Houston Black clay under most of Georgetown's newer commercial growth swells when it is wet and shrinks when it is dry. A curb sits on a shallow base with almost no weight on it, so it rides that movement up and down. Over a few seasons the joints open, sections tilt, and the gutter flow line turns into a series of high and low spots. You see this along SH 130, out toward Hutto, and in the subdivisions east of University Avenue.

Truck damage

Delivery trucks, refuse trucks and trailers cut corners. The rear wheels climb the curb at every tight radius, and a standard 6 inch curb without reinforcement loses its corner within a year or two. Drive entrances, dumpster enclosures and the ends of parking rows take the worst of it.

Water and undermining

Once a joint opens or a section drops, stormwater gets under the curb and washes out the base. Central Texas storms come hard and fast, and a gutter that does not drain becomes a channel that erodes the asphalt edge next to it. Standing water in the gutter also soaks the asphalt base, which is how edge cracking and settlement start.

What Our Curb and Gutter Service Includes

Profiles we commonly match: 6 inch standard curb and gutter, mountable or rolled curb in HOA communities like Sun City and Wolf Ranch, and 18 inch or 24 inch gutter sections on commercial lots.

Section replacement.Saw-cut at the nearest sound joints, remove the failed run, recompact the base and repour to match height, face profile and gutter width.
Gutter regrading.Reset the flow line so water moves to the inlet in one direction, no birdbaths.
Curb face repair.Broken corners and spalled faces at entrances and islands.
Curb inlets and drain tie-ins.Rebuild the concrete around inlets that have settled or separated.
New curb runs.Adding curb where an asphalt edge has been raveling with nothing to hold it.
Asphalt tie-in.Patching the strip of asphalt disturbed by the curb work so there is no gap for water.
Painting.Red fire lane curb and lettering after the concrete cures, coordinated with our fire lane striping crew.

Building Curb That Stays Put on Expansive Clay

Pouring new concrete on the same base that just failed is a waste of money. On clay sites we do a few things differently.

We excavate below the old curb and put in compacted flex base rather than pouring directly on clay. We dowel new sections into the existing sound concrete on both ends so the run moves as one piece instead of stair-stepping. On truck corners we add rebar and, where it makes sense, thicken the section. We cut control joints at proper spacing so the cracking that will happen lands in the joints, not in the middle of a section.

Drainage gets checked with a level, not by eye. A gutter that reads flat on a Georgetown lot in July will pond in October. We set fall toward the inlet and confirm it before the truck arrives.

On the limestone side of town, west of I-35 near Serenada and Berry Creek, the ground is more stable but rock close to the surface makes excavation slower. We plan for that in the estimate rather than surprising you with it later.

Our Curb Repair Process

A typical repair of a few hundred feet is a two to three day job. We phase larger lots so tenants keep their parking.

Walk the lot.Mark every failed section, note which are heave, which are truck damage, and where the water is going.
Written estimate.Linear footage, profile, base work, dowels, any asphalt patching, schedule.
Saw-cut and remove.Clean cuts at joints. Haul off the old concrete.
Base prep.Excavate, add and compact flex base, set forms to the flow line.
Pour and finish.Match the existing profile, broom finish, curing compound in hot weather.
Cure and reopen.Barricade for the cure, then patch the asphalt edge and open the area.

Patch, Replace a Section, or Replace the Run?

If you are not sure which row you are in, send photos. Most of the time we can tell heave from truck damage from the picture and give you a rough idea before the site visit.

FAQ

Curb & Gutter Repair in Georgetown: your questions answered

How much of the curb needs to be replaced?

Only the sections that have moved, broken or lost their base. We saw-cut at the nearest sound joints and dowel the new section into good concrete on both ends. If the joints have failed every few feet along a run, the base underneath has moved and we recommend replacing the run on new compacted base, because replacing one section at a time on that stretch will keep you calling us back.

Can you match the existing curb profile?

Yes. We measure the height, face batter, gutter width and flow line of the existing curb and build forms to match. Standard 6 inch curb and gutter, rolled or mountable curb common in Sun City and Wolf Ranch, and wider commercial gutter sections are all routine. The new concrete will look lighter at first and blends in within a few months of sun and traffic.

How long will the repair take and will the lot stay open?

A few hundred feet of curb replacement is typically two to three days including cure time. We barricade only the sections being worked and phase larger jobs so tenants and customers keep their parking. Concrete needs about three days before cars and a week before trucks, and we patch the asphalt edge and remove barricades as soon as it is safe.

Why does water sit in my gutter after it rains?

The flow line has lost its fall. Either a section has settled or heaved on the Georgetown clay, or the gutter was poured too flat to begin with and the first movement turned it into a birdbath. We shoot the grade with a level, find the high and low points, and replace or regrade the sections needed so water runs to the inlet. Sometimes the nearby asphalt needs regrading too.

Can you paint the curb red for the fire lane after the repair?

Yes. New concrete needs to cure before it will hold paint, usually about 28 days, so we schedule the return trip. We paint the curb face and top red and add the FIRE LANE NO PARKING lettering at the spacing the Georgetown fire marshal expects. If the rest of the fire lane is faded, we can restripe it on the same visit.
