Asphalt Repair & Patching, done right for Georgetown ground and heat

A pothole in Georgetown is usually born in a storm. Water gets into a crack, sits in the base for a week, and the next few hundred tires pump the softened material out until there is a hole. Fill it with cold patch from a bag and it will be back after the next rain. Cut it out to solid ground, fix what is under it and put in compacted hot mix, and it stays fixed. That second version is what TXST Paving Company does.

We are a licensed and insured asphalt contractor at 3901 E University Ave, and repair is a big part of our week. One of our longest-running customers is a shop owner whose driveway we have patched and sealed over several years. We do the same for homeowners in Old Town and Serenada, businesses around Georgetown Square, and property managers in Round Rock, Taylor and Salado. Call (737) 403-8619 for a free written estimate.

Asphalt Repair & Patching in Georgetown, explained

The Asphalt Damage We See Most in Georgetown

Different damage means a different cause and a different fix. Here is what we look for on a walk-through and what it usually tells us.

Scattered linear cracks on a firm surface are not a patching job. They get routed and sealed, which is covered under crack filling and repair.

Potholes.Water in the base. The base has washed or pumped out under the spot, so the surface is unsupported. The fix has to include the base.
Alligator cracking.A network of connected cracks in one area. The base or subgrade has moved or gone soft. Common on the Blackland clay east of I-35, and in drive lanes that carry more weight than the pavement was built for.
Edge cracking and edge drop-off.The edge of a driveway breaks off in chunks or the pavement pulls away from the border. In drought years the clay shrinks away from the edge and takes the support with it.
Depressions and birdbaths.Low spots that hold water after rain. Settlement of a poorly compacted trench or base. Water sitting there makes it worse every season.
Utility cuts and trench settlement.Where a plumber or the utility cut through and backfilled without proper compaction. Very common on older Old Town streets and driveways.
Raveling.Surface losing its fines and stone. Age and UV. This one is a sealcoat problem, not a patch problem, unless it has gone deep.

Asphalt Repair and Patching Services

Full-Depth Remove and Replace Patching

Our standard repair. We saw-cut a clean rectangle around the damage, remove the asphalt and the bad base beneath it, compact new base, tack the edges and place hot mix in lifts, compacted to match the surrounding surface. This is the patch that lasts.

Pothole Repair

Same method, sized to the hole. For a scattering of small potholes across a lot we can do a whole round in a day.

Edge Repair and Rebuilding

We rebuild broken edges with fresh base and hot mix, and on clay soils we add shoulder support so the edge has something under it when the ground pulls back in the next dry spell.

Skin Patching and Leveling

For shallow depressions and birdbaths where the base is still firm, a thin leveling course of hot mix restores the grade and gets the water moving again.

Parking Lot Repairs

Drive lanes, dumpster pads, entrance aprons and the strip along the curb where water sits. Property managers can find lot-specific details on our parking lot repair page. Where curbs and gutters are part of the problem, see curb and gutter repair.

Why Cheap Patches Fail in Central Texas, Georgetown TX03

Why Cheap Patches Fail in Central Texas

Most of the patches we replace failed for one of three local reasons.

The base was never fixed. A pothole is a symptom. The water that softened the base is the disease. A patch dropped on top of soft, wet base gets pumped out just like the original surface did. We remove the soft material and put in dry, compacted base every time.

The clay moved. East of I-35, from the Westinghouse Rd corridor out to Hutto and Taylor, Blackland Prairie clay swells after a wet spring and shrinks through a hot summer. A patch that was flush in April can be proud or sunken by September if the base under it was not deep enough to ride out the movement. On these sites we go deeper and compact harder.

Heat baked it. Central Texas sun pulls the light oils out of asphalt. A patch that was not compacted to density has air voids for UV and water to work through, and it ravels out from the edges in a couple of summers. We roll every patch hot, and we recommend sealing the whole surface after repairs so the new and old asphalt age together.

How We Repair Asphalt, Step by Step

Look and probe. We walk the area, mark every failure and check whether the base under each one is firm or soft. This decides whether the fix is a skin patch or full depth.
Written estimate.Square footage of each repair, depth, whether base is being replaced, and whether we recommend crack sealing or sealcoating with it.
Saw cut.Clean, straight cuts a foot or so beyond the visible damage, into sound pavement. Ragged edges are where patches fail first.
Remove.Old asphalt and any wet or loose base come out. We go down until we hit material that holds.
Rebuild base.Fresh crushed limestone base placed and compacted in lifts.
Tack and pave.Tack coat on the cut edges so the new asphalt bonds, then hot mix placed and compacted to match the surrounding grade.
Finish.Joints sealed, site cleaned, and a note on when the surface is ready for traffic, usually the same day once it cools.

FAQ

Asphalt Repair & Patching in Georgetown: your questions answered

Will a patch match the rest of my driveway?

A new hot mix patch is deep black and the old surface is grey, so it will show at first. The patch fades over the first year and the contrast softens. If you want a uniform look right away, sealcoating the whole driveway after the repair blends new and old together and protects both. We can price the repair with and without sealcoat so you can decide.

How many potholes before I should repave instead of patch?

It is less about the count and more about the pattern. A dozen scattered potholes on a firm driveway can be patched. A driveway where alligator cracking covers a quarter or more of the surface, or where the pavement is thin and soft in many spots, is telling you the base has failed and patches will keep coming back. We will show you which one you have on the walk-through.

Can you repair a utility trench that has sunk in my driveway?

Yes, and it is one of the most common repairs we do in older parts of Georgetown. We cut the sunken strip back to sound pavement, remove the loosely backfilled material, compact proper base in lifts and pave it flush with hot mix. Compacting the trench properly is the whole trick. If it is just topped with more asphalt it will settle again.

How long does an asphalt repair take?

Most residential repairs are finished in a few hours to a day, including saw cutting, removal, base and paving. A round of pothole repairs across a commercial lot is usually one day. The patch is ready for cars once it cools, typically the same afternoon or the next morning. We work Monday to Saturday and try to fit smaller repairs in without a long wait.

Why did the last patch fail after one year?

Almost always because the base under it was not replaced, or the patch was not compacted hot. Water that was already in the base kept working, and the new asphalt was pumped out the same way the original was. On clay soils east of I-35, a shallow patch also moves with the ground. Our repairs remove soft base, rebuild it dry and compacted, and roll the hot mix to density.
