Road Work in Georgetown

One local crew for every road work job

TXST Paving Company builds and rebuilds the roads the public works department does not touch: private roads, subdivision and HOA streets, ranch roads, RV park and storage yard drives, and the heavy duty surfaces that carry loaded trucks in and out of a yard every day. We are based at 3901 E University Ave in Georgetown and work across Williamson County, from Sun City and Berry Creek out to Jarrell, Liberty Hill, Hutto and Taylor.

Road work is different from a driveway. The section is thicker, the base is deeper, drainage is designed instead of hoped for, and the grade has to hold up under a concrete truck or a fifth wheel trailer, not just a pickup. This page covers what we build, how the four related services fit together, and how to choose between chip seal and hot mix for a long private road.

  • Asphalt Resurfacing: A new wearing course over sound pavement, with milling and leveling where the old surface needs it.
  • Parking Lot Repair: Potholes, drainage failures and base repairs for lots, with patches that match the surrounding surface.
  • Asphalt Milling: Cold milling that removes the failed top layer, restores grade and keeps curbs and drains at the right height.
  • Speed Bump Installation: Asphalt speed bumps and humps with proper profile, striping and signage for lots and private roads.

Road Construction in Georgetown, explained

What Road Construction Covers

Most of the road calls we get in Georgetown fall into one of five buckets.

Each of these starts with the same question: what is under the road now, and what will drive on it? The answer sets the base depth, the asphalt thickness, and whether we recommend hot mix asphalt or a chip seal surface.

Private roads and long driveways.Ranch entries off SH 29, Ronald Reagan Blvd and the county roads north toward Jarrell, often a quarter mile or more of gravel the owner is tired of grading.
Subdivision and HOA streets.Streets the developer built and handed to the association, now cracking and rutting at the intersections. Includes full rebuilds and mill and overlay programs.
RV park and boat storage drives.Lanes and pads near Lake Georgetown and along the Williams Drive corridor that see slow, heavy, turning loads.
Storage yard and truck yard surfaces.Contractor yards and equipment lots off Westinghouse Rd and SH 130 that need a section built for axle weight, not car traffic.
Church, school and campus loops.Bus loops and access roads that have to stay open on a schedule.

Road Construction Services in Georgetown

New construction is only part of the work. Most existing roads and lots need one of the four services below, and we handle all of them with our own crews and equipment.

Asphalt Resurfacing

When the base is sound and the surface is oxidized, cracked or worn, an overlay of new hot mix over the existing pavement is the most cost effective fix. We lay a leveling course where the road has rutted, apply tack coat so the new lift bonds, and hold curb reveal where there is curb. See asphalt resurfacing in Georgetown.

Parking Lot Repair

Potholes, alligator cracking in the drive aisles, sunken drain inlets and edge failures. We tell you which spots are surface patches and which need full depth base repair, then blend the repair into the surrounding lot. See parking lot repair in Georgetown.

Asphalt Milling

Cold planing removes a set depth of old asphalt so the new lift goes down at the same elevation as the curbs, gutters and storm drains. It is the first step of a mill and overlay and the right move when a road has been overlaid before. See asphalt milling in Georgetown.

Speed Bump Installation

Asphalt speed bumps, speed humps and speed tables for HOA streets, apartment drives and school loops, built to a profile that slows traffic without wrecking suspensions, with the striping and signage to go with them. See speed bump installation in Georgetown.

Building Roads on Williamson County Ground

Georgetown sits on a line. West of I-35 the ground is shallow limestone and caliche, which drains well and makes a firm platform. East of I-35, through the Westinghouse Rd corridor toward Hutto and Taylor, the Blackland Prairie takes over. Houston Black clay shrinks hard in a summer drought and swells after a wet spring, and a road built directly on it heaves at the edges and cracks down the middle within a few seasons.

That changes how we build.

Hard freezes like February 2021 and January 2024 open existing cracks wider, but they are not the main enemy. Heat, sun and clay movement are, and a road built for those three will handle a freeze.

Subgrade. On clay we cut deeper, moisture condition and compact the subgrade, and in bad spots we stabilize with lime or add a separation fabric before base goes down.
Base.Crushed limestone flexible base, placed in lifts and compacted to a density we check, not guess. Thickness follows the traffic. A ranch road carrying a pickup and a hay trailer is one thing, a yard that takes loaded trucks all day is another.
Drainage.Standing water is what kills base in Central Texas. We crown the road, set bar ditches or swales, size culverts at low water crossings, and make sure flash flood runoff has somewhere to go besides under your asphalt.
Surface.Hot mix at 100 plus degrees in July loses its light oils fast. A dense mix, compacted properly, plus a sealcoat a year or two in, holds off UV oxidation and keeps the surface flexible.

Chip Seal or Hot Mix for a Private Road

The most common question from ranch and acreage owners between Georgetown, Liberty Hill and Salado is whether to chip seal or pave with hot mix. Both are real roads. They are built for different budgets and traffic.

FactorChip sealHot mix asphalt
SurfaceAsphalt emulsion with a layer of rock rolled in, texturedDense, smooth, plant mixed asphalt
Best forLong ranch roads, light traffic, gravel upgradesHOA streets, RV parks, truck yards, anything with turning loads
Upfront costLower per square yardHigher per square yard
Service lifeShorter, expect to reseal on a cycleLonger, with sealcoating and crack filling
Loose rockSome for the first weeks, sweeping requiredNone
Trailer turns and power steeringCan scuff and ravelHandles them
Base requirementStill needs a compacted base, no shortcutCompacted flexible base, thicker for heavy loads

Our rule: if the road is mostly straight, mostly cars and pickups, and long enough that hot mix stretches the budget, chip seal over a proper base is a good road. If trailers turn on it, trucks load on it, or it is a neighborhood street where people walk and kids ride bikes, hot mix is the better long term buy. We will price both if you ask.

How a Road Project Runs

Roads open to light traffic once the mat has cooled. Heavy loads wait longer. We schedule with the HOA or park manager so residents know what is closed and when.

Site walk and estimate. We look at the existing surface, dig a test hole or two to see the base and subgrade, check where water goes, and talk through traffic. You get a free written estimate with the section spelled out: subgrade prep, base depth, asphalt thickness, drainage items.
Clearing and grading.Brush, old surface and soft spots come out. Our excavation and grading crew shapes the subgrade, sets the crown and cuts the ditches.
Subgrade compaction.Moisture conditioned and rolled. Soft clay pockets get dug out and replaced or stabilized.
Base placement.Flexible base spread in lifts, watered and compacted with a vibratory roller. Culverts and inlets are set before base is finished.
Prime or tack.Prime coat on the base for new construction, tack coat between lifts.
Paving.Hot mix laid with a paver at a consistent depth, then breakdown and finish rolling while the mat is hot. Joints are staggered and rolled tight.
Striping and signage.Centerlines, stop bars, speed humps and signs as the project calls for. Our striping crew handles layout.

FAQ

Road Construction questions, answered

How thick does a private road need to be?

It depends on the traffic and the soil, not a single number. A ranch road for pickups on limestone needs less base than a truck yard on Blackland clay. We size the base and asphalt from what will actually drive on it, and we dig a test hole first so the estimate reflects the ground you have, not a guess.

Can you pave over my existing gravel road?

Often, yes. If the gravel has been there for years and is well compacted, it can serve as part of the base. We regrade it, add and compact new flexible base where it is thin, fix the drainage, then pave with hot mix or chip seal. Loose, muddy or rutted gravel gets reworked before anything goes on top.

Do HOA streets need a city permit?

Private streets owned by the association usually do not need a City of Georgetown paving permit, but every community is different and utility locates are always required before we dig. We check with the city and the HOA's management company during the estimate so there are no surprises on the schedule.

How soon can we drive on a new asphalt road?

Cars and light trucks can usually use it once the mat has cooled, often the same day. We ask that heavy trucks, trailers and anything with power steering turning in place stay off for a longer period while the asphalt hardens, especially in summer heat. We give you specific timing for your project.

Do you build culverts and low water crossings?

Yes. Drainage is part of every road we build. Our excavation crew sets culverts, shapes bar ditches and swales, and builds up low water crossings so spring and fall storms pass under or over the road instead of washing out the base. Standing water is the fastest way to lose a road in Central Texas.
