Asphalt Paving, done right for Georgetown ground and heat
A lot of driveways around Georgetown were never really paved. They were graveled when the house was built, topped up every few years, and now they wash toward the road every time a storm comes through. Others were paved thin during a building boom and have been patched so many times there is more patch than pavement. Either way, there is a point where new asphalt is the sensible move, and TXST Paving Company is the crew that does it.
We are a licensed and insured asphalt contractor working out of 3901 E University Ave in Georgetown. We pave driveways, private roads, parking areas and small subdivision streets across Williamson County, from Berry Creek and Santa Rita Ranch to Liberty Hill, Jarrell and Round Rock. Asphalt Paving in Georgetown, explained
When Paving Makes More Sense Than Patching
Patching is the right answer for a few bad spots. It stops being the right answer when the spots connect. Here is how we make the call on a walk-through:
If your driveway has a couple of potholes and firm pavement everywhere else, we will tell you to patch it. That work is covered on our asphalt repair and patching page.
02What Our Asphalt Paving Service Includes
Every paving job starts with the ground and ends with a compacted, sloped surface that sheds water. What happens in between depends on what you are paving.
New Driveways
Excavation to depth, compacted crushed limestone base, then hot mix asphalt placed and rolled to a finished 2 to 3 inches. We shape the edges, tie into the street or county road approach, and set the slope so water leaves the driveway. See driveway paving for residential specifics.
Private Roads and Ranch Drives
Long drives off SH 29, Ronald Reagan Blvd and the county roads toward Jarrell and Liberty Hill can run a quarter mile or more. For these we talk through hot mix versus chip seal honestly. Hot mix lasts longer and looks better. Chip seal costs less per foot and is a solid choice for a long, low-traffic drive you plan to reseal every several years.
Parking Areas
Small lots for offices, shops, churches and storage yards. Heavier base, thicker asphalt, and a layout that accounts for stalls, ramps and drainage. Larger commercial work lives on our parking lot paving page.
Resurfacing and Overlays
If the base is sound but the surface is worn, we clean or mill the old asphalt and lay a new lift over it. Cheaper than full replacement and a good fit for a lot of 15 to 20 year old driveways. Details on asphalt resurfacing.
Concrete to Asphalt Conversion
Broken concrete driveways can be removed and replaced with asphalt, which flexes better on moving clay and costs less to repair later. See concrete to asphalt conversion.
03How Georgetown Soil and Heat Change the Build
Most paving failures we get called to look at were not a mix problem. They were a base problem, and around here the base is a soil problem.
East of I-35, in places like Santa Rita Ranch, Teravista and out toward Hutto and Taylor, the Blackland Prairie clay swells when it is wet and shrinks when it is dry. Through a long summer drought that clay pulls away from the edge of a driveway and leaves nothing holding it up. The edge cracks, drops, and the crack lets in the next rain. On these lots we go deeper on the base, compact it in lifts, and build a wider shoulder so the edge has something to lean on.
West of I-35, around Berry Creek, Serenada and the Williams Drive side toward Lake Georgetown, we are usually on limestone or caliche a foot or two down. That ground does not move much, but it does not absorb water either, so slope and drainage do the work. A flat driveway on limestone holds water, and water under asphalt is what kills it.
Then there is the sun. Fresh asphalt is at its best on day one. From there, 100 degree summers and UV pull the oils out, and the surface turns grey and brittle. We recommend a first sealcoat within the first year or two and can put you on a schedule through our asphalt maintenance service.
How We Pave, Step by Step
Hot Mix, Chip Seal or Overlay: Which Fits Your Project
We put the option we think fits your situation in the estimate and explain why. If two would work, we price both and let you choose.
| Option | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| New hot mix asphalt | Driveways, parking areas, anything with daily traffic | Longest life, smooth black finish, highest upfront cost |
| Chip seal | Long ranch drives and private roads with light traffic | Lower cost per foot, rougher texture, some loose rock for a few weeks, reseal every several years |
| Overlay on existing asphalt | Worn surface over a sound base, often 15 to 20 years old | Mid cost, fast, raises the surface at edges and garage, only works if the base is good |
| Full remove and replace | Failed base, thin pavement, bad grade | Highest cost, but a fresh start that fixes drainage and support at the same time |

Asphalt Paving in Georgetown: your questions answered
How long will a new asphalt driveway last in Georgetown?
With a proper base and a sealcoat every few years, 20 years or more is realistic. Without sealing, Central Texas sun will grey and dry out the surface within a few years and cracks will follow. The base matters just as much: a driveway built on compacted limestone base over stable ground will outlast one dropped on unprepared clay by a decade.
Is chip seal a good option for a long ranch driveway?
Often, yes. For a quarter mile drive with a few cars a day, chip seal gives you a paved, dust-free surface at a lower cost per foot than hot mix. The trade-offs are a rougher texture, some loose rock at first, and the need to reseal every several years. If you run heavy trucks or want a smooth black finish, hot mix is the better fit.
Can you pave over my existing driveway instead of tearing it out?
If the existing asphalt is firm, at least a couple of inches thick and not alligator cracked, an overlay works well and saves money. If the old surface is thin, broken up or sitting on a soft base, an overlay will just crack in the same places within a year or two. We check on site and tell you which one you are dealing with.
What time of year is best for paving in Central Texas?
We pave most of the year. Hot mix needs warm ground, so summer is actually good for placement, although we roll fast because the mix stays workable longer. Spring and fall storms are the main scheduling problem, since we cannot pave on saturated base. Hard freezes are rare and short. We will give you a realistic window when we write the estimate.
How soon can I drive on new asphalt?
Foot traffic once it has cooled, usually the same evening. Cars the next day. In summer heat we ask you to keep trucks, trailers and anything with a kickstand or jack off the surface for several days, and to avoid turning the wheels while stopped. Asphalt keeps hardening for months, so it gets tougher as the first season goes on.
