Speed Bump Installation in Georgetown

Speed Bump Installation, done right for Georgetown ground and heat

Somebody at the HOA meeting brings it up every spring: cars are flying down the main street past the playground, and the board wants speed bumps. It is a reasonable ask. It is also one where the details matter, because a bump built to the wrong profile, put in the wrong place, or left unmarked creates complaints, damaged cars and a fire department that cannot get its truck through cleanly.

TXST Paving Company installs asphalt speed bumps, speed humps and speed tables for HOAs, apartment communities, churches, schools, RV parks and commercial lots across Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander and Hutto. This page walks through the three types, how we build them, where they go, and what to settle before the vote.

All our road work services

  • Asphalt Resurfacing: A new wearing course over sound pavement, with milling and leveling where the old surface needs it.
  • Parking Lot Repair: Potholes, drainage failures and base repairs for lots, with patches that match the surrounding surface.
  • Asphalt Milling: Cold milling that removes the failed top layer, restores grade and keeps curbs and drains at the right height.
  • Speed Bump Installation: Asphalt speed bumps and humps with proper profile, striping and signage for lots and private roads.

The short version: bumps belong in parking lots, humps and tables belong on streets. If a board asks us for bumps on a subdivision road, we usually talk them into humps or tables, and the fire marshal generally agrees.

How We Build Them, Georgetown TX02

How We Build Them

Profile

The profile is the height and the shape of the rise. A hump that is too tall or too short front to back becomes a bump. We build to standard profiles, generally 3 to 4 inches high with a smooth rounded top, and check with a straightedge as we shape it. Speed tables get a flat top with ramps on each end.

Material and bond

Hot mix asphalt, placed over a cleaned and tacked surface so it bonds to the existing pavement. We shape it by hand and with a roller while it is hot. Bumps that are dumped and raked without tack peel off in a season, especially in Georgetown summer heat when the surface is soft and every tire is twisting on it.

Ends and drainage

Humps and tables are usually held back a foot or so from the curb, or tapered at the ends, so gutter flow is not blocked and cyclists have a pass. Where there is no curb we taper to the edge. Blocking the gutter on a street in Berry Creek or Serenada during a spring storm makes a pond that will not be popular.

Striping and signage

Every bump, hump or table gets reflective striping, usually white or yellow chevrons or bars on the approach faces, so drivers see it at night. We add advance warning signs and a marker at the device where the layout calls for it. Our line marking crew handles the paint and thermoplastic.

Where They Go and How Many

Placement decides whether the devices work or just annoy people.

We walk the street with the board or manager, mark proposed locations with paint, and let you look at it before anything is built.

Spacing.Humps spaced a few hundred feet apart keep speeds down between them. One hump on a long straight just moves the speeding to the other end of the street.
Sight lines.Never just over a crest or around a blind curve. Drivers need to see them coming.
Not in front of drivewayswhere possible, and not where a car has to stop on the hump for a stop sign or a gate.
Away from inlets and manholesso the device does not dam a drain or sit on a lid.
Near what you are protecting.Ahead of the playground, the pool entrance, the school drop off, the mail kiosk in an RV park.
Lighting.Under or near a streetlight if you can, since striping fades and a dark hump is a complaint waiting to happen.

HOA, Fire Access and Liability Considerations

A few things to settle before the work order.

Who owns the street.Traffic calming on a public street in Georgetown, Round Rock or Leander goes through the city, not a contractor. We install on private streets, private drives and parking lots: HOA owned streets, gated communities, apartment and condo drives, commercial lots.
Fire lane access. The local fire marshal has a say on any device in a fire lane or on an emergency access route. Many departments accept speed tables and properly profiled humps and dislike bumps. Ask before you build. We can help with the sketch.
Board approval and notice.Get the vote recorded and give residents notice of construction dates. Nothing generates emails like an unannounced hump.
Accessible routes.Devices should not interfere with accessible parking, ramps or crosswalk approaches. See our accessible space marking page.
Liability.Unmarked or odd shaped devices are where claims come from. A standard profile, striping and signage are cheap compared to that.

Installation Process

Speed bumps can also be added while we are doing other work on the lot, like restriping or a sealcoat, which saves you a mobilization.

Site walk with the board, manager or owner. Discuss the problem, the street layout and the fire access route.
Free written estimate with device type, count, locations, striping and signage listed.
Fire marshal check if a fire lane or emergency route is involved.
Mark locations on the pavement for your review.
Clean and tack the pavement, place and shape hot mix to profile, roll.
Stripe after the asphalt has cured, set signs.
Open to traffic. Humps can usually be driven over the same day once cooled.
Georgetown Conditions That Affect Speed Bumps, Georgetown TX06

Georgetown Conditions That Affect Speed Bumps

Two things. First, heat. A speed hump takes a hit from every tire, and in July the asphalt is soft. Proper tack, proper compaction and a dense mix are what keep the hump from shoving and rounding off over a summer. Second, the pavement it sits on. A hump built on a cracked, moving street over Blackland clay east of I-35 will crack along with it. If the street needs repair or an overlay, do that first and put the humps on the new surface. We will tell you if that is the case rather than build on a street that is about to be redone.

FAQ

Speed Bump Installation in Georgetown: your questions answered

Speed bump or speed hump, which one do I need?

For a parking lot or garage where you want cars at walking pace, a bump. For a residential street, apartment loop or school drive where you want traffic held to 15 to 25 mph without jolting every car, a hump or a speed table. Humps and tables are also friendlier to fire trucks, which matters on any street with houses on it.

Can we install speed bumps on our HOA street?

If the association owns the street, yes, with board approval and any fire marshal review the layout needs. If the street was dedicated to the city, traffic calming has to go through the city instead. We can usually tell from the plat which one you have, and we will walk you through the approvals before we quote.

Do speed bumps need fire marshal approval?

If they sit in a designated fire lane or on the emergency access route through a community, the local fire marshal should sign off on the type, profile and spacing. Many departments prefer speed tables or humps over bumps. We recommend asking early. A sketch with locations and profiles usually gets a quick answer.

How high is a speed hump?

Standard humps are about 3 to 4 inches tall at the crown and 12 to 14 feet long in the direction of travel, which gives a smooth rise at the design speed and a firm one above it. A speed table is similar in height with a flat top. We build to those profiles and check them with a straightedge, because a hump that is too steep is just a big bump.

Do you install rubber bolt down speed bumps?

We build asphalt devices. Bolt down rubber can work in a parking garage, but out in Georgetown sun and heat the rubber fades, the anchors loosen, and the edges catch tires and sweeper brushes. Asphalt humps bonded to the pavement with tack last longer, look like part of the street, and can be striped and reshaped as needed.
