Driveway Paving, done right for Georgetown ground and heat

A driveway in Georgetown has a harder life than most people think. It bakes at 100 degrees for weeks, then takes three inches of rain in an afternoon, and underneath it the clay is moving the whole time. TXST Paving Company builds driveways for that. We are a licensed and insured driveway paving contractor at 3901 E University Ave, and driveway work is where most of our Google reviews come from, including a Georgetown realtor who refers her clients to us and a shop owner whose drive we have patched and sealed over several years.

This page covers new asphalt driveways in the subdivisions, replacement of cracked or gravel drives, ranch driveways, and the long private lanes out toward Jarrell, Liberty Hill and Salado where the chip seal versus hot mix question actually matters.

All our paving services

  • Driveway Paving: Residential driveways, ranch drives and long private lanes paved in one to two days with a clean, sealed edge.
  • Parking Lot Paving: New parking lots from subgrade to stripes, graded to drain and built for delivery trucks.

Driveway Paving in Georgetown, explained

What a Failing Driveway Looks Like Around Here, Georgetown TX01

What a Failing Driveway Looks Like Around Here

Most calls start the same way. The driveway has gone grey, there is a crack running the length of it, the edge by the lawn has crumbled, and there is a low spot by the garage that holds water after every storm. In Sun City and Berry Creek that is usually a driveway built on thin base twenty years ago that has simply run out of life. In newer neighborhoods like Wolf Ranch and Santa Rita Ranch it is more often a builder-grade drive that was never sealed and has oxidized in the sun.

East of I-35, add clay heave to the list. Houston Black clay under a driveway near Westinghouse Rd shrinks away from the edges in a drought, the unsupported edge cracks, then the clay swells back in the fall and lifts the pavement. If your driveway has a hump near the street or the edges have dropped, that is the ground, not the asphalt.

Some of these driveways can be saved with patching and a sealcoat. Others need to come out. We will tell you which, and why, before we quote anything.

Driveway Paving Services, Georgetown TX02

Driveway Paving Services

We handle every type of driveway you will find in Williamson County.

New Residential Driveways

New construction and additions, typically 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix over 6 inches of compacted flexible base. We tie in cleanly to the garage slab, the sidewalk and the street apron, and cut a straight, supported edge.

Driveway Replacement

Old asphalt or broken concrete torn out, base rebuilt or added, new asphalt laid and compacted. If your existing drive is concrete, see concrete to asphalt conversion.

Gravel to Asphalt

An existing gravel drive is often a head start. If the gravel is deep and well packed we regrade it, add base where needed and pave over it. If it is thin and full of clay, we build fresh.

Ranch Driveways and Private Lanes

A quarter mile to several miles, gate to house. Ditches, culverts, cattle guard approaches and turnouts, with a straight conversation about chip seal versus hot mix. More on that below.

Extensions and Parking Pads

Widening for a third car, an RV or boat pad beside the house, turnarounds. Matched to the existing drive so it does not look bolted on.

Chip Seal or Hot Mix for a Long Drive?, Georgetown TX03

Chip Seal or Hot Mix for a Long Drive?

For a normal suburban driveway the answer is hot mix asphalt, every time. For a 1,500-foot ranch lane the math changes, and we are honest about it.

Chip seal is sprayed asphalt emulsion with a layer of rock rolled into it, usually one or two courses over a compacted base. It costs a fraction of hot mix per foot, sheds water well, and is what most county roads around Taylor and Jarrell are made of. The trade-offs are a rougher surface, loose rock for the first few weeks, and a shorter life before it needs another course.

Hot mix asphalt is a dense, plant-mixed pavement laid with a paver and compacted with rollers. It is smoother, quieter, tighter against water, holds up better under trucks and trailers, and can be sealed and maintained for decades. It costs more up front and needs a paver on site, which means a wider access path and a bigger crew.

Our usual advice: hot mix from the house out to where you park and turn around, then chip seal the long run to the gate. That puts the money where the tires are.

How We Build a Driveway on Georgetown Soil

Site walk and layout. We check where the water goes now, what the soil is, what we are tying into, and mark the edges with paint.
Removal and excavation.Old asphalt, concrete or sod comes out. On the clay side of town we cut deeper to make room for more base.
Subgrade.Compacted and proof rolled. Soft spots are dug out and replaced. Bad clay is lime treated or bridged with extra base.
Base.Crushed limestone flexible base placed in lifts and compacted to a hard, tight surface graded to drain.
Hot mix asphalt.Laid with a paver and compacted while hot with a steel drum roller. Thickness matches the traffic and the base.
Edges and cleanup.Edges backfilled and supported. Tie-ins to the garage and street finished flush. Site cleaned before we leave.
Sealcoat later.A first driveway sealcoat after the asphalt cures, usually 6 to 12 months, then every 2 to 3 years.

Repair, Resurface or Replace?

An overlay only works when the base is good. We probe a driveway before we recommend one, because an overlay over failed base is money thrown away.

FAQ

Driveway Paving in Georgetown: your questions answered

How long before I can drive on a new asphalt driveway?

You can usually walk on it the same day and park on it after 24 to 48 hours, longer in the middle of a Georgetown summer because the asphalt stays soft in the heat. For the first few weeks avoid turning the wheels while stopped, keep trailer jacks and kickstands on a board, and do not park in the same spot every day.

How thick should a residential driveway be?

Our standard section is 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix asphalt over 6 inches of compacted crushed limestone base. On expansive clay east of I-35, or where an RV or heavy trailer will park, we add base or treat the subgrade rather than just adding asphalt. Thickness only helps if what is under it is solid.

Can you pave over my existing gravel driveway?

Often, yes. If the gravel is several inches deep, well compacted and free of clay pumping up through it, we regrade it, add base where it is thin and pave on top. If it is a thin layer of rock on raw clay we remove it and build a proper base. We check it during the free site visit.

Why is my driveway cracking along the edges?

Two reasons, usually together. The edge was never supported with backfill, so it has nothing to lean on when a tire runs over it. And in dry months the clay shrinks and pulls away from the pavement edge, leaving it hanging. New driveways get a compacted, backfilled edge. Existing ones can be edge-patched and sealed.

Is chip seal a good choice for a ranch driveway?

For a long lane with light traffic, yes. Chip seal over a good base costs far less than hot mix, drains well and is easy to renew with another course later. It is rougher, sheds loose rock at first and does not like heavy truck traffic. We often pave hot mix near the house and chip seal the long run to the gate.
