One local crew for every excavating job
Good pavement starts a foot or two below the surface. TXST Paving Company handles the dirt work that comes before the asphalt or concrete: clearing brush and old slabs, cutting high ground, filling low ground, shaping the site so water leaves, and building a compacted base that will carry traffic for decades. We are based on E University Ave in Georgetown and run excavation crews across Williamson County, from Sun City and Wolf Ranch out to Hutto, Liberty Hill and Jarrell.
Most excavating contractors hand the site off and move on. We are the paving contractor too, so we build the subgrade the way we want to pave over it. That means honest cut depths, moisture-conditioned fill, slopes that drain, and a base that is proof rolled before a single ton of hot mix shows up.

Excavating Contractor in Georgetown, explained
What Excavating Work Covers
Excavating for pavement is not just digging a hole. It is a sequence of steps that turns raw or worn-out ground into a stable, well-drained platform. On a typical Georgetown job we handle:
We do this work as a package with our own asphalt paving and concrete crews, or as standalone site work when you already have a builder lined up for the structure.
02Excavating Services We Offer
Our site work falls into three services. Most projects use all three in order, but each one can be booked on its own.
Excavation Services
Cut and fill, trenching for drainage, haul off, building pads and drive corridors. We run excavators, dozers and skid steers sized for anything from a residential driveway in Berry Creek to a multi-acre commercial pad on the Westinghouse Rd corridor. Every dig starts with a Texas 811 locate so nobody is guessing where the gas and fiber run. Read about our excavation services.
Site Clearing
Brush, trees, stumps, root balls, old pavement, slabs and debris. In this part of Texas that usually means Ashe juniper (what everyone calls cedar) and mesquite with roots that will heave a driveway if they are left in the ground. We clear it, grind or pull the stumps, haul the debris, and leave a clean footprint ready for grading. Read about site clearing.
Grading and Leveling
Rough grading to shape the site, fine grading to hit final elevations, crown and cross slope on drives, and laser grading on pads and parking lots. The goal is positive drainage every time. Water that sits on a lot in Georgetown after a spring storm finds its way into the base and softens it. Read about grading and leveling.
03Digging in Georgetown: Clay East, Rock West
I-35 is roughly the dividing line between two kinds of ground in Williamson County, and it changes how we plan a dig.
East of I-35 (Teravista, parts of Serenada, out toward Hutto and Taylor) sits on Blackland Prairie clay. It is soft and easy to move when damp and hard as brick in August. It also swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which is the main reason pavement on the east side heaves and cracks. Our answer is to cut deeper, remove the worst of the plastic clay under the pavement, moisture condition what stays, and build a thicker base so the surface rides over seasonal movement instead of following it.
West of I-35 (Sun City, Wolf Ranch, Rancho Sienna, Liberty Hill) is shallow limestone and caliche. Digging is slower and sometimes takes a hydraulic hammer, but the ground is stable once you are on rock. The problem there is usually drainage. Thin soil over rock sheds water fast, so grading has to carry runoff around the pad and away from the pavement edge.
Either side, we look at what comes out of the first test cut before we commit to a base thickness. That is a big part of why our paving work holds up through drought summers and flash-flood springs.
How to Choose an Excavating Contractor
A few things to ask before you hire anyone to move dirt on your property in Georgetown, Round Rock or Cedar Park:
TXST Paving is licensed and insured, 5.0-star rated on Google, and gives free written estimates that list the cut, fill, base thickness and compaction we are quoting so you can compare bids on equal terms.
What Different Projects Need Below the Surface
Every site is different, but the table below shows the site work we typically plan for common projects around Georgetown. Treat the base numbers as starting points. The written estimate will name the actual thickness for your lot.
| Project | Typical site work | Base under pavement | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential driveway | Clearing, rough and fine grade, culvert at the road if needed | 6 to 8 inches of flexible base | Tree roots, downspouts discharging onto the drive |
| Ranch drive or private road | Brush clearing, cut and fill along the corridor, crown, bar ditches | 6 to 8 inches, chip seal or hot mix on top | Low water crossings, erosion on curves and grades |
| Commercial parking lot | Demolition, mass grading, storm drainage, curb and inlet prep | 8 to 12 inches, lime-treated subgrade on heavy clay | ADA slopes, detention and city drainage review |
| Building pad (shop, barn, metal building) | Strip topsoil, select fill in lifts, laser grade | Select fill compacted to the engineer's spec | Plastic clay under the pad, pad height versus drainage |
| RV storage or gravel yard | Clearing, grading, drainage, base only | 6 to 10 inches, often left as compacted base | Heavy axle loads, wheel ruts, dust |
If the end goal is a lot or drive, our parking lot paving and driveway paving pages cover what goes on top.

Excavating Contractor questions, answered
Do you have to remove all the clay before paving in Georgetown?
No, and on most lots you could not afford to. What we do is cut out the top layer of the most active clay under the pavement, moisture condition and compact what stays, and put enough flexible base on top that the asphalt or concrete is not reacting to every wet and dry cycle. On heavy Blackland clay east of I-35 we may also recommend lime treatment of the subgrade.
Can TXST Paving do the excavation and the paving, or do I need two contractors?
One contractor. We clear, cut, fill, grade and build the base with our own crews and equipment, then our paving or concrete crew comes in behind them. That keeps the schedule tight and means the subgrade is built the way the paving crew wants it. If you already have a builder for a structure, we will do the site work alone and coordinate with them.
How long does site work take for a driveway or small lot?
A residential driveway in a neighborhood like Berry Creek or Serenada is usually one to three days of clearing, grading and base, depending on how much dirt has to move and whether a culvert is involved. A commercial lot can run one to three weeks of site work before paving. Rain stretches everything, because we will not compact wet clay. We give you a schedule with the estimate.
Do I need a permit for excavation or grading in Georgetown?
It depends on the job. Driveway approaches onto a city or county road, work that changes how stormwater leaves a property, and commercial site work generally need approval from the City of Georgetown or Williamson County. Small grading inside a residential lot often does not. We tell you what applies to your project when we walk the site, and we handle the paperwork we are responsible for.
What happens to the dirt, brush and old pavement you remove?
We try to balance cut and fill on site first, because dirt you keep is dirt you do not pay to haul. Spoil that has to leave goes to an approved fill site. Brush is chipped or hauled. Old asphalt goes to a recycler, where it becomes millings and new mix, and broken concrete is crushed for base. Nothing gets pushed into a corner of your property unless you ask us to leave it.

Not sure which of these you need?
That is what the free site visit is for. We look at the pavement and tell you what it actually needs.
